What to See in Málaga’s Historic Centre: A Walking Route from Your Apartments on Calle Santos

There are cities best understood from within rather than from books. Málaga is one of them. Its historic centre brings together, within just a few square kilometres, a concentration of history, architecture and everyday life that is difficult to find anywhere else in the Mediterranean.

Staying in the old town is not simply a matter of convenience. It is the difference between seeing the city and experiencing it. From Chinitas Santos, at Calle Santos 8, Málaga’s most important landmarks are literally just around the corner.

The Central Axis: Calle Larios (2 Minutes’ Walk)

The famous Calle Larios is the central thoroughfare of the historic centre, and most of the surrounding streets lead into it. It forms the heart of the area’s social life and is also a key commercial and economic landmark. Visit Costa del Sol

But Calle Larios is not just a shopping street. It is the setting for Holy Week, the August Fair, the Christmas lights that become a national trend every year, and the Fashion Week that has placed Málaga on the European fashion map. At any time of year, there is always something happening here.

At the end of Calle Larios, Plaza de la Constitución has been a meeting point for the people of Málaga since the Middle Ages.

The Cathedral: La Manquita (3 Minutes’ Walk)

Málaga Cathedral is one of Spain’s most valuable Renaissance treasures. It was built over the Great Mosque from the 16th to the 17th century. Visitacostadelsol The well-known absence of its second tower — which gave it the nickname “La Manquita” — has a story of its own: the funds intended to complete it were diverted to finance American independence.

If you can, go up to its rooftop terraces. The views over the historic centre from there are among the best in the city.

Picasso Museum Málaga (5 Minutes’ Walk)

One of only three Picasso museums in the world and the most visited in all of Andalusia. Here, you can discover a comprehensive collection of the artist’s work. It is located on Calle San Agustín, just a few metres from the main entrance to Bodegas El Pimpi and the Cathedral. Flamenco Alegría

What many people do not know is that Picasso was born just a few streets from here, in Plaza de la Merced, and that he took his first drawing lessons at the city’s Athenaeum. The neighbourhood, quite literally, shaped him.

The Alcazaba and the Roman Theatre (8 Minutes’ Walk)

The Alcazaba is a Moorish fortress considered the little sister of Granada’s Alhambra, as it also features a small palace in its upper section. In addition, its gardens and courtyards will make you feel as though you have stepped back into the medieval period. Andalucía Vibes

At its foot lies the city’s Roman Theatre, dating from the 1st century BC. Seeing these two monuments together — one Roman, one Arab — is to understand, at a glance, Málaga’s 2,000 years of history.

How to Plan Your Day

The historic centre is entirely pedestrianised, which means you can explore at your own pace. The classic route of Calle Larios + Cathedral + Picasso Museum + Alcazaba can be comfortably completed in half a day. Add the Atarazanas Market in the morning and an afternoon of tapas in Plaza de la Judería or Calle Bolsa, and you have the perfect day in Málaga.

From Chinitas Santos, all of this is less than a ten-minute walk away. If you are looking for charming apartments in Málaga’s old town, with the advantage of being at the heart of this itinerary, check availability here.
